While I have learned from many dog trainers over the years, a few stand out. Thanks to Glen Johnson, who early in the 80s taught me about inducive training. And also to Bill Dotson, who introduced us to Schutzhund and Search & Rescue.
Thanks Tracey Louper for letting me help teach classes, and being my friend and sounding board for new dog training ideas.
Special thanks to friend and mentor Michael Ellis. Michael is a gifted dog trainer and teacher, and almost everything I use and teach these days comes from Michael.
And thanks to Ivan Balabanov, who started our club, Big Sky Schutzhund Club, on the way to becoming thinking dog trainers.

Class Notes: Beginning Agility Class
Timing is everything in dog training. Using a reward marker allows the dog to clearly understand what the desired action is, and what he's getting rewarded for.
Upper Snake River Valley DTC Trial
The K9FUN store will be at the USRVDTC trial this weekend in Rigby Idaho. Corbie will be running in Excellent Standard & Jumpers, and Lexi will try her paw in Novice Jumpers. I’m working feverishly on braided leashes of all kinds and colours, I hope you like them! See you there, -sam

New NATCH!
Well, we chickened out and didn’t make the drive up to Kalispell afterall. But we heard that it was a great trial… and congratulations to Jackie and Risk for their NATCH!!! How exciting! Risk is an awesome little dog, and Jackie is doing a great job with her. They also competed for the first time [...]
Glacier Chasers Trial
If the weather permits, Corbie & I will be taking the K9FUNdamentals store to Kalispell for the weekend. Glacier Chasers always puts on a fun trial: I’m looking forward to Oktoberfest as well as the chance to see some excellent agility from the Canadians. Hope the roads are clear! -sam
No double Qs, but a great time!
Thanks to HMKC for a very fun trial. We really enjoyed judge Sue Fregien’s courses, which were both challenging and fast. Corbie Q’d in two standard runs, taking first place in ExB 20″ one day – that doesn’t happen often!, and third the other. He added in a few gratuitous jumps in the jumpers runs, [...]
K9FUN store heading to Helena
Helena Montana Kennel Club is hosting an AKC agility trial this weekend and the K9FUN store will be there. Corbie will also be running in Excellent Standard and Jumpers… wish us luck, it sure would be nice to bring home a Double Q! Cheers, -sam

Congratulations!!!
Congratulations to my former student, Jeannie Biggers!!! I say “former” student, because Jeannie has far surpassed the teacher. She and her two Aussies, Paisley and Saige, not only survived the NADAC Championships in Tennessee, but placed in the ribbons consistently! Congratulations to the three of them and to all the successful NADAC competitors!
I learned to braid!
Thanks to Rocky, who took the time to teach me to braid like the buckaroos did. Although they used leather and horse hair instead of parachute cord! I now have 4- and 8-strand snap leashes and agility slip leads available in a variety of colours. They are available in both snap lead and slip lead [...]
