Corbie got the last Chances Q (qualifying run) he needed to achieve his NATCH (NADAC Agility Trial Champion) this last weekend at the Billings Regional Agility Group “BRAG” trial. I’m very honoured that we got our NATCH under friend and judge Jackie Loeser.

Many thanks my agility friends at BRAG for a fun weekend. The
Creekside Arena is very nice and in a beautiful area. The weather actually warmed up and was sunny Sunday. And no snow! which was a real treat after the huge amount Bozeman got last Thursday.

Other brags from BRAG:
Paisley won the Elite Regular High in Trial award
Huckleberry the coonhound earned the Elite Vet HIT award

The drive home was interesting… I got stuck behind a wreck on the hill coming down into Big Timber where the road was just glass. A semi had jack-knifed and blocked the whole westbound lane. I pulled up about 12 cars behind the wreck at 4:10, still hoping to make it home before dark… and traffic finally started moving again at 5:50. Oh well, agility in Montana…

Hoops help teach the handler to show the path

I hate hoops. I hate watching the hoopers class. Although it’s getting better, dogs & handlers bounce around the course like ping pong balls, rushing from one test to the next. Dogs are barking: I hear them saying “I thought we were doing agility! Where are the OBSTACLES?!”

And the hoops themselves — there’s nothing sexy about hoops. They’re boring. Plastic, lightweight and boring.

But, after a recent Keri Daun (Sharon Nelson) seminar, I’ve come to realise a very important concept: it’s not about the hoops, it’s about the path.

Well, duh. I teach in my classes that it’s not about the obstacles, it’s about the path between the obstacles. The obstacles are the easy part. (Well, maybe not the contacts, but that’s a whole ‘nother story!) What makes agility challenging is how to direct the dog around the course, making a twisty-curvey, nonsensicle path into a flowing, efficient, obvious path for the dog.

It’s not the hoops, it’s the path. Be the path.

If it takes hoops for me to fundamentally understand this concept, well then, hoops are good.

Be the path
